CHRISTINE SENDER

Initial studies included a major in Fine Arts at Melbourne University, with my ensuing careers being in Teaching and the Law. Returning to art practice, I studied for several years with John Lawry focusing on impressionistic interiors and streetscapes.

A yearning for more experimentation led to a move in an abstract direction, enhanced by membership of Creative Space Abstract Art Group Hawthorn, an experimental and process focused group of like-minded artists, with Raphael Zimmerman as our mentor.

My current focus is Moroccan inspired abstract art, often using collage and mixed media with its many creative possibilities. Found papers such as discarded tickets, catalogues, old newspapers, magazines, give a cross section of and insight into places and lives and it is fascinating to incorporate some of the grit, grain and texture of these otherwise discarded, waste materials into my paintings. Sometimes the collage can inspire or enhance a "story," sometimes it serves to provide another textural ground to further work upon and provoke a new direction. I am interested too, in the lovely combination of cold wax, oils and collage to create layers, depth and complexity.

The recent move in a lyrical abstract direction has provided the challenges of producing art with more emotive content using highly charged colours to engage the viewer in my personal vision.
